Andrew Baumann

vice-president

    Biography

Andrew Baumann specializes in U.S. political issues and provides strategic advice to political campaigns, issue advocacy organizations and foundations.  Along with Al Quinlan, Baumann leads the firm’s extensive work in Michigan, where he has overseen polling in over 40 state legislative districts as well as a U.S. Senate race, three Congressional races, and the state’s renewable energy ballot measure, among other work, over the last three years.  He also leads the firm’s work on energy and environmental-related issues.

In 2012, he helped the Michigan House Democratic Caucus overcome an extreme Republican gerrymander to gain six seats; he helped Congressman Gary Peters overcome his underdog status and win reelection in a member-vs.-member primary whose demographic tilt favored the other incumbent, and his work for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s (DSCC) IE campaign in Wisconsin helped Tammy Baldwin become the Senate first openly gay member.  In 2010, he helped Peters survive in an extremely difficult environment, and his work for the DSCC in Colorado helped Senator Michael Bennet become one of the few Democratic bright spots on Election Day in 2010.

In addition to leading the firm’s work on energy issues, Baumann also has extensive experience on health care-related research, leading Democracy Corps’ year-long research project on health care reform in 2009.  His current and recent clients include:

    Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI)

    Congressman Gary Peters (MI-14)

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC – WI, CO and NM)

    The Center for American Progress

From 2008 to 2010, Baumann directed polling for Democracy Corps, a non-profit organization founded by Stan Greenberg and James Carville that provides strategic messaging and targeting advice to progressive groups, candidates and leaders.

Baumann is the author of several commentaries in Politico, Reuters and the Huffington Post, including, “Obama’s Mandate: Tax Increase on the Rich,” “GOP Could Rue Embrace of Big Oil,” “A Winning Progressive Deficit Reduction Plan,” "GOP's No-Tax Extremism puts them in Political Peril,“How Democrats can win the Debate on the Budget,” and “The Dangers of Pre-emptive Social Security Cuts.” He is also frequently interviewed for print, radio, blogs, and TV, including C-SPAN.

Prior to joining the firm, Baumann worked as the Deputy Research Director at the DSCC. He has also served as Research Director for Senator Kent Conrad and worked on the research and policy staffs of America Coming Together, Senator Joe Biden, and Governor Howard Dean.
